The Book Babes August radio show airs this Wednesday at 11:30. Tune to WMNF-FM 88.5 in Tampa, if you're on Florida's West Coast, or click on www.wmnf.org, to listen to it streaming on the Internet). Here are the highlights:
Ellen interviews Jim Lynch about his new novel, "Border Songs," out this summer from Knopf. No, it's not about the border to our south. The novel takes place at the U.S. Northwest and Canada border. Lynch's first novel, "The Highest Tide," which won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, features an undersized 13-year-old boy. The main character of "Border Songs" is a border agent who is 6'8" tall.
Margo interviews cartoonist/writer Stan Mack about The Cartoon Chronicles of America series aimed at young adults that he is co-writing with partner Susan Champlin. "Road to Revolution," the first in the series, is just out from Bloomsbury. Mixing fact and fiction (and keeping you guessing which is which until sorting it out in a helpful index at the end), the book tells a story of the American Revolution in comic strip format as seen through the eyes of two fictional teenagers. Mack pioneered a documentary style of cartooning with his comic strip, "Stan Mack's Real Life Funnies," in the Village Voice.
The Book Babes also recommend two books for summer reading:
Ellen: "Sacred Hearts," by Sarah Dunant (Random House)
Margo: "Love is a Four-Letter Word: True Stories of Breakups, Bad Relationships, and Broken Hearts," edited by Michael Taeckens, with an introduction by Neal Pollack (Plume)
