Margo Hammond, former BOOK EDITOR at the St. Petersburg Times, is the co-host of the Book Babes’ radio program on WMNF-FM, co-author of “Between the Covers: The Book Babes’ Guide to a Woman’s Reading Pleasures” and editor of the memoir “Post Scripts: A Writing Life After Eighty,” by LaVerne Hammond.

You Are What You Read! That's the theme of the  May Book Babes radio show co-hosted by Ellen Heltzel and Margo Hammond. The show airs Wednesday, May 19, at 11:30 a.m. on WMNF-FM 88.5 in the Tampa Bay area and streams at the same time on the Internet at wmnf.org.

THE ENDURING APPEAL OF "LITTLE WOMEN"

In an interview with Margo Hammond, Barbara Sicherman, author of "Well-Read Lives: How Books Inspired a Generation of American Women" (University of North Carolina Press) talks about the enduring appeal of Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women" and how women in  the 19th century were influenced by the books they read.

BOOKS FOR GRADS

The Book Babes suggest gift books for the graduate -- from grade school to college. Match the book to the graduate and get kudos for a personalized pick.

 1. TRADITIONALIST: How about the works of America’s finest writers? The Library of America is a non-profit publisher that specializes in keepsake editions spanning a range from the Founding Fathers to contemporary classics. Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty and Philip K. Dick are just some of the enduring writers that graduates will want on their bookshelf for years to come.

 2. OVERACHIEVER: Get a graduate ready for the Phi Beta Kappa key with “Bounce: Mozart, Federer, Picasso, Beckham and the Science of Success,” by Matthew Syed (Harper). This former table tennis champ and Oxford grad dives into the old debate about nature vs. nurture to show that early signs of promise are no predictor of success. Try hard work and determination, instead.

 3. YOUNG READER: In “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” Sherman Alexie (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, available in paperback and collector's edition) won the National Book Award with this autobiographical novel that should give any grade school grad hope.  Here’s one messed-up kid on an American Indian reservation who survives to tell his story. So can you! The collector’s edition has a cool slip-on cover.

4. COLLEGE GIRL: “Commencement,” a Vintage paperback novel by J. Courtney Sullivan, is a fun gift for any coed-to-be who has dreams of making new friends while earning her diploma. Four young women with nothing in common meet during their first year at Smith College and stay friends through graduation and beyond. Chick lit with a serious twist.
